Portable and tent saunas

By the zauna editorial team · Updated 11 October 2026

A portable sauna can be a wood-fired tent or an infrared format such as a blanket, tent or dome. Sauna tents pair a fabric enclosure with a stove and sauna stones. Your choice depends on the space you have, how much equipment you want to carry, and whether you want to manage a wood fire.

What counts as a portable sauna?

The term covers different products, so start with the heating method rather than the label. Hott Sauna describes its tents as insulated fabric enclosures heated by wood-fired stoves with sauna stones. Roman Oasis also lists a portable tent bundled with a wood stove. These are outdoor products, with gardens among their advertised uses.

Infrared products form another group. Wild Sauna UK describes blankets, soft-sided tents and rigid domes. Its guide says blankets fold into a holdall, tents fold flat, and domes are semi-portable because of their rigid frames.

The sources disagree on the definition. Wild Sauna UK says portable saunas can only be infrared. That conflicts with the wood-fired portable products listed by Hott Sauna and Roman Oasis. For your comparison, treat “portable” as a description of how a product can be moved, not a reliable indication of its heat source.

Which tent size and weight should you compare?

Look at dimensions alongside the advertised capacity. Roman Oasis lists its Highlander tent as 2.1 metres high. The tent weighs 12 kg; that figure is not a combined tent-and-stove weight.

Hott Sauna lists differently sized options: - Gnistan: measuring 2.1 metres wide by 2.1 metres long, with a tent weight of about 11 kg. - Flamman: measuring 2.05 metres high, with a tent weight of about 22 kg.

Both Hott models list carrying bags for the tent and stove. If you are comparing them for carrying rather than garden use, keep the distinction between tent weight and total equipment weight in mind. A carrying bag alone does not tell you how much the complete package weighs.

What construction details are worth checking?

The product listings describe different fabrics, supports and window arrangements. Roman Oasis lists a layered construction for the Highlander. This combines flame-retardant cotton, a needled-cotton insulation layer and a water-resistant Oxford outer fabric. It also lists reinforced corners, fibreglass poles and steel joiners.

Outbacker describes Oxford inner and outer fabrics as waterproof and flame-retardant. Its tent has reinforced pull points, wall supports, an adjustable vent and windows. Detachable window covers provide control over light and privacy.

The Outbacker tent has no floor. Its listed accessories include a heat-resistant ground mat, a carry bag, pegs and guy ropes. When you compare packages, separate the enclosure's construction from the accessories supplied. A ground mat and a built-in floor are not the same feature. These are product specifications, not installation instructions.

How quickly do sauna tents heat up?

Published timings vary, and assembly time is different from heat-up time. Hott Sauna's comparison gives Gnistan a heating time of about 10–15 minutes and Flamman about 20–25 minutes. Its broader description says its tents reach 90°C in 10–25 minutes.

Roman Oasis gives a 20-minute heat-up figure for the Highlander bundle. Its assembly claims are inconsistent: the introduction says 90 seconds for the tent, while the later description and specifications say 120 seconds. Neither figure describes the heating period.

Steam & Oak gives a longer, general estimate of 30–45 minutes for wood-fired saunas. That differs from the product-specific tent timings above, so there is no single agreed figure across these sources. If timing matters to you, compare the claim for the exact model rather than applying a general portable-sauna estimate.

How much does a portable sauna cost?

The supplied listings show several price points, but they do not establish that every product includes equivalent equipment. Roman Oasis lists its Highlander tent-and-wood-stove bundle. The supplied page also marks it as sold out.

Zauna's records list a starting price of £169.99 for the Runitude Portable Sauna Tent. They also list Sweat Tent and the HEX Complete Wood-Fired Sauna Kit. The Runitude and Sweat Tent records do not specify their heating type or package contents.

Steam & Oak separately lists its PortaSauna HEX. Keep that retailer's quoted product and price distinct from zauna's HEX record. Before you compare headline prices, check whether the listing covers the tent, stove and flue, rather than assuming that a lower price buys the same package.

What does wood-fired ownership involve?

A wood-fired tent brings fuel and upkeep into the decision. Steam & Oak describes using dry, seasoned or kiln-dried logs, with storage under cover. It estimates roughly £2–£2.50 in logs per session for wood-fired saunas generally. That is not a measured running cost for each tent featured here.

The same guide notes ash clearing after sessions and periodic flue sweeping. Consider those tasks alongside the tent's weight, size and price when deciding whether this format suits you.

For a UK garden, check smoke-control requirements with your council before buying a wood-burning model. Steam & Oak highlights restrictions on fuels and appliances and advises checking the specific stove. Portability does not answer that question. Resolve it before choosing a wood-fired package, rather than relying on the product's outdoor or garden description.

Questions people ask

Are all portable saunas infrared?
No. Although Wild Sauna UK uses that definition, Hott Sauna and Roman Oasis list portable wood-fired sauna tents. Check the heating method on the specific product rather than relying on the word “portable”.
How many people can a sauna tent hold?
Advertised capacities differ. Compare the dimensions of Roman Oasis's Highlander and Hott Sauna's Gnistan and Flamman as well as their advertised capacity figures.
Does the quoted tent weight include the stove?
The cited weights for Highlander, Gnistan and Flamman are tent weights. Do not treat them as combined package weights when comparing how much equipment you would carry.
Does every sauna tent have a floor?
No. Outbacker explicitly lists an open-base tent without a floor. A heat-resistant ground mat is included among its accessories.
What should you check before buying for a UK garden?
Compare the dimensions, tent weight, heating method and included equipment. For a wood-fired model, check smoke-control requirements with your council and confirm the position for the specific stove. Include fuel storage, ash clearing and flue sweeping in your decision.
